What is an Apostille?

Understanding apostilles, document authentication, and when you need them for international use.

An apostille is an official certificate issued by the High Court of South Africa that authenticates the origin of a public document. It verifies that the document is genuine and was issued by a recognised authority, making it legally valid for use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. South Africa became a member of the Hague Convention, which means South African documents bearing an apostille are accepted in over 120 member countries without further legalisation.

The Notary Guy handles the entire apostille and authentication process on your behalf. We notarise your documents, prepare the necessary applications, and liaise with the High Court to obtain your apostille certificate. For countries that are not members of the Hague Convention, we also assist with full document legalisation through DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Cooperation) and the relevant embassy.

When Do You Need an Apostille?

  • Immigration and visa applications — Many countries require apostilled birth certificates, marriage certificates, and police clearance certificates as part of visa or residency applications.
  • Education abroad — Universities and educational institutions overseas may require apostilled academic transcripts and qualifications.
  • International business — Company registration documents, powers of attorney, and commercial contracts may need authentication for use in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Property transactions abroad — Buying or selling property in another country typically requires apostilled documentation.
  • Personal status documents — Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and death certificates often require apostilles for foreign authorities.

The Apostille Process

The process begins when you upload your documents for pre-inspection. Our notary reviews your documents to confirm they meet the requirements for apostille. We then notarise the documents where required and submit the application to the High Court. Once the apostille certificate is issued, we return your authenticated documents to you. The turnaround time depends on the High Court's processing schedule, but we keep you informed at every step via WhatsApp.
